Dave attended St. Xavier University on a football scholarship where he excelled both on the field and in the classroom, and was rewarded for his dedication and hard work by being named to the 1995 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Academic All-American Team. Upon graduation, he was named Northwestern Mutual's Chicago Network office's 1997 Rookie of the Year and then subsequently received the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network's Regional New Financial Representative Award for several years in various categories: Bronze (2nd place - 1997), Silver (2nd place - 1998), Gold (1st place - 1999), and Platinum (1st place - 2000). Dave is a 5 time qualifier (2000, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) of the elite Northwestern Mutual Forum, which represents the top producing Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Representatives in the country. In 2007, Dave received his CLU designation from The American College.
